Summer is a popular time to visit Cairns and the surrounding regions because of the beautiful beaches that are offer, and the entrance that it provides to the Great Barrier Reef. While the weather might be hot and sticky, there are endless opportunities to stay cool in the water, with swimming, sailing and other popular water sports.
If you are after a Christmas holiday, then Cairns will certainly offer you the opportunity to relax and unwind, in one of the many resorts that dot the coastline. Can you imagine yourself doing nothing except lazing by the pool side and indulging in Christmas foods? Cairns could be the perfect attraction for this time of year, if you are by yourself, with friends or your entire family.
One of the important considerations for Cairns as a Christmas holiday destination is while its located on the water, it isn’t situated right on the beach front. You will need to have a car to explore the local area, up and down the coast, if you are seeking beaches, or plan to keep your swimming and lazing around to the pool side. There are many pools in the hotels and resorts in Cairns, but there is a large, public and spectacular pool that is right in the centre of town, and it is perfect for staying cool in the summer heat.
The beauty of Cairns is, even though it isn’t right on the beach, it is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most beautiful locations. You can easily escape the mainland from Cairns, to visit islands and participate in water sports, including snorkelling, boating, sailing and scuba diving. Visitors from around the world travel to Cairns just so that they can access the reef and explore the coral and sea life that is on offer there.

The Cairns Mayor’s Christmas Appeal
During the Christmas period the local council gather donations to support local residents in need. Individuals, families, community groups and businesses work together to collect various items that can be used to brighten someone’s Christmas period. These include gifts of food, household items and toys for children. These are put together to create hampers that represent the spirit of giving and sharing for the Christmas season.
If you live in the Cairns area this is certainly an activity that you can get involved with, by yourself, with your family or with other people that you might know. Young children can also contribute to the Cairns Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and learn to share the spirit of sharing and giving. Donations of money can be taken by the council all year around, however toys, gifts and hamper items will be collected near the end of the year, just before Christmas.
